What is Shilajit

Shilajit is an ayurvedic herbal substance that has been used for thousands of years to treat virtually all ailments. Shilajit contains over 85 trace minerals, and is extremely rich in fluvic, humic, and amino acids. It is referred to as “the destroyer of weakness”. In traditional ayurvedic medicine the term “shilajit” refers to a mineral composed of biomass that oozes out of the Himalayan mountains between 10,000 and 12,000 feet altitude. In recent times shilajit has been mined in countries other than India. Shilajit is also mined in Russia and more recently the United States. But we will get to different types and qualities of shilajit later in this article.

I will share a great story I heard about the early discovery of shilajit. Yogi’s that lived in the Himalayas in ancient times saw the most agile monkeys climbing to far off cave and eating this black substance. The yogi’s attributed the monkey’s incredible abilities to the shilajit and started eating it themselves.

Shilajit Benefits

As I said before, shilajit is so powerful it can be used to treat virtually all ailments. It is widely praised for its healing properties, cellular rejuvenation, and restoring youthfulness and energy. For millennia shilajit has been utilized to support energy, memory, mood, absorption of vital nutrients, sharp intelligence, balanced blood sugar, improve detoxification, and optimizing oxygenation. It is commonly prescribed to men to increase libido. It is an adaptogen which means it helps your body to make better use of the minerals you are already taking in through food and supplementation.

Shilajit also helps to decalcify the pineal gland. The first time I took shilajit, I had an unforgettable third eye opening experience. I’ve been taking it ever since. You may not have the same experience I did, but I promise you shilajit will aid your body in more ways than I can possibly mention in this blog. Shilajit has been a wonderful aid to my yoga and meditation practice. Everyone can benefit by using shilajit.

Shilajit Powder or Resin?

To use power or resin is very much personal preference. Resin does not dissolve well in water which makes it harder to take. Powder mixes well in water, but both forms have a very unpleasant taste that turns most people off to the mineral immediately. Shilajit in pill form is also available.

Shilajit Reviews

This is the perfect time to mention different qualities of shilajit. Indian shilajit is great but it does have some drawbacks. The taste is terrible. The problem with getting a mineral from a third world country is the regulation process is nonexistent. Shilajit from India likely has excessive amounts of heavy metal toxins which are not good for the body. Russian shilajit is a sticky tar-like substance with a strong smell. For years I thought this was the good stuff. How wrong I was. I recently found this strong smell comes from the high ammonia content in Russian-sourced shilajit. I don’t know about you, but my body does not react well to ammonia.

I recently discovered American Shilajit, now this is the good stuff. First of all, because America has exacting standards in its medical industry, the production of American Shilajit is highly regulated. It contains no heavy metal toxins. American Shilajit does not have ammonia. Best of all, American-sourced shilajit has absolutely no flavor. The best brand of shilajit I have ever used is made by 5D Minerals. This brand of shilajit is harvested in an ancient mine is American southwest that was originally used by the Anasazi tribe of Native Americans. The product 5D Minerals sells comes in a liquid form with a dropper that makes it easy to measure accurate dosage, and did I mention it has no flavor!!!

Wherever you get it and in whatever form you take it, shilajit will enhance your quality of life. Do yourself a favor and take advantage of what mother earth provides to all of us.
